Sculpture: A head in Clay

Dates: 6–7 November 2025
Time: 10am–4pm
Fee: £130
Age/ability: Adults, all abilities welcome
Tutor: Sam Halstead
Course Description:
Dive into the timeless art of sculpting the human head using clay in this immersive two-day workshop held in our bespoke-built sculpture studio set within a beautiful sculpture garden. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience, this course will introduce you to essential techniques of accurate measuring, modelling, and shaping to capture lifelike portraits. Working at half to three-quarter scale, you’ll develop your observational skills, learn to model facial features with precision, and build confidence creating expressive, three-dimensional heads.
Clay, as a tactile and versatile medium, offers immediacy and responsiveness, allowing you to shape, refine, and adjust your sculpture intuitively. This hands-on approach connects you directly with the form, making the creative process both engaging and rewarding.
With a small group limited to 10 students, you’ll receive personalised tuition and expert guidance from professional artist Sam Halstead. All materials are provided, so you can fully immerse yourself in the creative process. Please wear clothes suitable for working with clay.
This workshop is perfect for anyone passionate about portraiture, sculpture, or looking to deepen their artistic practice in a supportive and inspiring environment surrounded by nature.
Group size is limited to 10 to ensure ample space and individual tuition. All materials are provided. Please wear messy clothes or bring an apron.
